WASHINGTON (CN) - The U.S. National Park Service is planning a 27-mile bike path for Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, according to a proposed regulation. The first stage of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail bike path was completed in June, with the rest to be constructed over a ten year period, the NPS said. The route generally will parallel state highways but also will use "existing corridors, such as old logging trails and a narrow gauge railbed," according to the regulation. The path would increase safety and encourage alternative transportation for "bicyclists, walkers, runners, wheelchair users, rollerbladers, and cross-country skiers," the agency said. The 71,000-acre Lakeshore is named after a complex of ancient sand dunes formed by wind, ice and water over thousands of years, according to the regulation.
